Star anise has a characteristic smell of anise with a sweet aromatic flavor and a slightly peppery aftertaste. Aroma is even more intense if the seeds are crushed or ground.

The Asian badian tree was introduced to Europe at the end of the 17th century.
Its fruit, star anise, is shaped like an 8-branched star (carpels), with a diameter of 1 to 2 cm.
The fruits are picked green and take their reddish-brown color after drying.
